Lens setup

The look of ‘Refraction’ is due, in part, to the vintage lenses used to photograph it.
A 2x anamorphic 16mm projector lens was coupled with a still photography lens known for its unique bokeh. The anamorphic lens was orientated to squeeze the image vertically rather than horizontally as with conventional anamorphic widescreen. The image was captured at 16:9 ratio on an APS-C sized sensor. After desqueeze the image ratio is 8:9, and the anamorphic artefacts are at 90° from usual.
The taking lens used was a Helios-44M-4 58mm f2, and the anamorphiser was a Bell & Howell BH16-2 2x anamorphic 16mm projector lens.
The variable dioptre focusing lens of the anamorphiser was modified to achieve infinity focus and reduce the number of turns required to adjust focus. Inspiration for this modification was taken from AJ Young’s description here.
